How to Downgrade to an Older Version

Step 1: Uninstall the current version

Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find "7-Zip", and click Uninstall. Or use Control Panel > Programs and Features. This removes the current version but does not delete your settings.

Step 2: Download the old version

Click the Download link for your desired version in the table above. All links point to the official GitHub releases page.

Step 3: Verify the SHA-256 checksum

Before installing, verify the file integrity: right-click the downloaded file > 7-Zip (if installed) > SHA-256. Compare with the official checksum on GitHub releases.

Step 4: Install the old version

Run the downloaded installer. Your previous 7-Zip settings (context menu options, language, etc.) will be preserved and automatically applied to the old version.

Step 5: Prevent automatic updates

7-Zip does not auto-update, so your downgraded version will remain until you manually install a different one. To check for updates manually, use Help > Check for Updates in the 7-Zip File Manager (this only directs you to the download page, it does not auto-install).

Old Versions FAQ

Are old 7-Zip versions safe to use?

Old versions downloaded from the official GitHub releases page are authentic and clean. However, they may contain security vulnerabilities that have been fixed in newer versions. Only use old versions if you have a specific reason, and always verify the SHA-256 checksum.

Can I install an old version over a new one?

It's recommended to uninstall the current version first, then install the old version. However, running the old version installer directly over the new version usually works — it overwrites the files. Your settings are preserved either way.

Where can I find very old versions (before 21.00)?

Versions before 21.00 are not available on GitHub releases. You can find the complete changelog at 7-zip.org/history.txt, but download links for very old versions are not officially provided. We recommend using version 21.07 or later.

Do old versions work on Windows 11?

Yes, most versions from 21.00 onwards work on Windows 11. However, for the best Windows 11 experience (modern context menu, ARM64 support), use the latest version. Older versions may have a legacy-style context menu on Windows 11.

Will my settings be preserved when downgrading?

Yes. 7-Zip stores settings in the Windows registry (or a config file for portable versions). These settings are not removed during uninstallation, so when you install an older version, your previous settings (context menu options, language, file associations) are automatically applied.
