how-to-avoid-corrupted-downloads
- 1
Always download from official sources
Only download software from the official website or official GitHub repository. For 7-Zip, this means 7-zip.org or github.com/ip7z/7zip. Avoid third-party download portals, mirrors, and file-sharing sites that may serve modified or corrupted files.
- 2
Verify the file size
Before running a downloaded file, check its size. The official 7-Zip installer is approximately 1.3–1.6 MB. If the file is significantly larger, it may contain bundled software. If it is smaller, the download may be incomplete or corrupted.
- 3
Check the SHA-256 hash
After downloading, calculate the SHA-256 hash and compare it with the official checksum. Right-click the file > 7-Zip > SHA-256. If the hashes do not match, the file is corrupted or tampered with — delete it and re-download.
- 4
Scan with antivirus
Upload the file to VirusTotal.com for a free scan by 70+ antivirus engines. The official 7-Zip installer should show zero detections. If multiple engines flag the file, it is likely compromised.
- 5
Check the digital signature
Right-click the file > Properties > Digital Signatures tab. Verify the signer is the official developer. If the file is unsigned or signed by an unknown entity, do not run it.
- 6
Use a stable internet connection
Network interruptions during download can cause file corruption. Use a stable connection for large downloads. If the download fails or is interrupted, start over rather than trying to resume a partially downloaded file.
- 7
Use HTTPS connections
Always ensure the download URL uses HTTPS (not HTTP). HTTPS encrypts the connection, preventing man-in-the-middle attacks that could inject malicious data into your download. Both 7-zip.org and GitHub use HTTPS.
